  • Interest-bearing funding and identifiable liquidity exceed examined asset limits
  • Cards, derivatives, treasury and wealth products require contract-level review

Business-activity disclosure

Emirates NBD reports corporate and institutional banking, retail banking, treasury and Islamic banking. Conventional interest income was AED 7,634 million, or 53.19% of total operating income, and conventional lending/deposit-taking remains core despite Islamic offerings.

Limitation: The filing does not classify every fee, trading, card, wealth, derivative or Islamic product by Sharia contract; the conventional core and disclosed net-interest result independently establish failure.

Purification

The asset fails at the core business-activity level. The 53.19% net-interest figure is evidence of failure, not a donation percentage that makes continued ownership compliant.

Inputs, assumptions and primary sources
  • Amounts are AED millions from Emirates NBD's March 31, 2026 interim statements.
  • Interest-bearing funding uses customer deposits of approximately AED 830 billion, due-to-bank funding and AED 94,228 million of debt issued/sukuks/borrowed funds; this is a conservative bank-funding input.
  • Liquidity includes cash/deposits with central banks and due from banks; identifiable investment securities are used separately.
  • Receivables include net loans and receivables of AED 677,835 million plus other assets and accrued/profit receivables.
  • Net interest income of AED 7,634 million is compared with AED 14,353 million total operating income as a directly disclosed minimum conventional-interest numerator.

This is a reproducible financial screen, not a fatwa. A failed total-assets screen can coexist with a pass under a market-cap methodology. ZakatInvest keeps the qualitative assessment separate so numerical thresholds do not erase material context.
