Is TCEHY Halal?
Gaming, social and FinTech conglomerate — financial ratios pass, but the mixed activity remains methodology-dependent.
What You Should Know
Tencent's 2025 Annual Report reports debt/assets of 19.02%, liquidity/assets of 24.27%, receivables plus cash/assets of 9.37%, and conservative interest income of 2.25% of revenue. WeChat, gaming, advertising and FinTech involve school-specific content, riba and contract questions, so the qualitative verdict remains doubtful.
⚠️ Concerns
- •Gaming and entertainment content concerns
- •WeChat Pay and FinTech require riba and contract review
- •Advertising and merchant categories are not isolated
- •Interest income is a conservative 2.25% screen input, not a purification ruling

Business-activity disclosure
Tencent operates social platforms, online games, advertising, cloud and business services, and FinTech. The portfolio is materially mixed: gaming and content, conventional payment/finance activity, and advertising require school-specific qualitative review even though the asset-based financial ratios pass.
Limitation: Tencent does not provide a school-neutral prohibited-revenue numerator separating gaming/content, conventional finance, advertising or downstream merchant activity.
Purification
Tencent reports RMB 16,909 million of interest income, approximately 2.25% of revenue. The disclosed amount is a conservative screening upper bound and not a prescribed investor purification percentage.
Inputs, assumptions and primary sources
- Amounts are RMB millions from Tencent's 2025 Annual Report.
- Interest-bearing debt includes borrowings of RMB 250,987 million plus notes payable of RMB 136,746 million; operating lease liabilities are excluded.
- Cash and cash equivalents are RMB 141,041 million. The report's liquidity table presents term deposits and others of RMB 353,837 million, treated as a conservative aggregate interest-bearing-securities input without adding cash again.
- Accounts receivable are RMB 49,930 million and 2025 revenue is RMB 751,766 million.
- Interest income is RMB 16,909 million and is used as a conservative upper bound, not as a scholar-approved purification percentage.
This is a reproducible financial screen, not a fatwa. A failed total-assets screen can coexist with a pass under a market-cap methodology. ZakatInvest keeps the qualitative assessment separate so numerical thresholds do not erase material context.
